The 1980s Action Park Band — also known as “Action Park: The 80s MTV Show” — is one of Joe Gills’ signature live productions, a full-costumed, high-energy tribute to the wild, neon-lit decade that defined youth culture and television music.
⸻
🎸 Concept & Theme
The show recreates the feeling of being inside MTV’s golden era — when music videos ruled, hair was high, and everything was loud, fast, and fun.
Set against the chaotic, nostalgic spirit of New Jersey’s infamous Action Park, the performance blends the reckless joy of the waterpark with the outrageous pop, rock, and new wave sounds that shaped the 1980s.
⸻
📺 Music & Performance
Each set is designed like a live-action MTV block:
• Smash hits from Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Springsteen , The Cars, A-ha , Van Halen, Stray Cats , Adam Ant, Prince, Bowie, Huey Lewis , and more.
• Segments themed after MTV countdowns, roller-rink anthems, and summer boardwalk nights.
• On-stage visuals inspired by VHS static, neon grids, and retro commercials — blending live video projections, vintage logos, and character cameos from 80s pop culture.
⸻
🕶️ Style & Production
• Costumes: Authentic 1980s wardrobe — acid-wash jeans, leather jackets, fingerless gloves, big hair, mirrored shades.
• Visuals: MTV-era graphics, lights, and motion backdrops evoke the original cable-TV revolution.
• Tone: Playful, electric, and over-the-top — with tongue-in-cheek humor and audience interaction reminiscent of 80s music TV hosts .
🎸 Joe & Jon — Co-Partners in The 1980s Action Park Band
Birth of an 80s Band: ACTION PARK
Joe & Jon Co-Partners
Joe and Jon first met at Magee’s Bar in Wayne, NJ May 2022 over a burger and beers to discuss Joe’s idea of an all 80s show. Joe had a successful teen and college band in the 1980s but quit music all together in 1992. Jon, a veteran keyboardist, and vocalist and kept his music chops up over the decades with local bands. Jon loved what he heard, from the song selection, the costumes, the skits, and he loved one of the show names Joe proposed, “ACTION PARK … wow, that’s it “ John said! Jon notes, “Not only would I get to play the best era’s music, but Joe asked me to direct a show, and be a co—partner in band that took music seriously, but not themselves. Joe notes, “I saw Jon play keyboards, he was a showman waiting for a show, a pure entertainer without an outlet. I figured, if he didn’t like what I wanted to do, then nobody would. Joe sates, “We work well together, our voices, our ideas, and talents really give this band a personality, different from other acts, and it makes the whole experience of this show an 80s delight for the audience creating a show that will make you smile, laugh, and dance.”
